Julien Nguyen, Managing Partne, Concept Ventures

Prior to co-founding Concept Ventures, Julien Nguyen founded Applied Materials Ventures in 2001, and was a Managing Partner until 2005. He led investments in companies such as Devicescape, Grandis, M-Stream (acquired by Broadcom NASDAQ:BRCM), Takumi, with co-investors such as August Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Mobius, Sevin Rosen, IT Farm, and corporate investors (Broadcom, NEC, Renesas, Rohm, Toshiba). Prior to Applied Materials Ventures, Julien Nguyen was a Venture Partner at Global Catalyst Partners focusing on investments in communications infrastructure.

Julien Nguyen is also a serial entrepreneur who founded and led four successful startups from inception to market leadership in digital media, semiconductor and software. Julien co-founded Ezlogin, a leading developer of personalization infrastructure tools for internet sites and wireless carriers in January 1999, and served as its Chairman until the acquisition of Ezlogin by 724 Solution for $127M in June 2000. Prior to Ezlogin, Julien founded Novita Communications in 1996, and served as its CEO until 1998 when Novita was acquired by PlanetWeb, where Julien served as Vice President of Online Business and Chief of Operations. Novita developed Java-based communications software and services for the consumer, with award-winning products such as the LiveLetter multimedia email application, and LivePage, a web page creation targeted for novice users. Julien launched E-Motions in May 1992 to develop the first MPEG playback card for PCs. After introduction and wide scale adoption of its flagship product, the RealMagic card, E-Motions was acquired by Sigma Designs, where Julien continued to serve as Co-Chairman until 1996. Prior to founding E-Motions, Julien was in charge of all product development at Radius for the first five years of the company, and worked in various capacities at Daisy Systems and Matra Space Division (France).

Julien earned a Master of Science degree from Ecole Polytechnique in France and a Post Graduate degree from Telecom Paris. Mr. Nguyen holds 21 patents granted in the US. Julien serves as a Director of Grandis, Inc., Takumi Technology Corporation, and Sigma Designs, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIGM).
